RDP session to win7 computer disconnect after 2 min of idle.

Hi Guys

Had a customer that had a problem where there RDP session to Win7 would disconnect after 2 min.

I found that the problem was the default session timeout. Although the policy says default is not to disconnect I found users disconnecting in two mins.

Following is how to change these setting on Win7 professional.

  1. Start
  2. Run (or Win key r)
  3. gpedit.msc
  4. Computer Configuration
  5. Administrative Template
  6. Windows Compenents
  7. Remote Desktop Services
(WinXp this is Terminal server …)
  8. Remote Desktop Session host
  9. Session Time limits
  10. “Set time limit for active but idle remote desktop services sessions”
  11. set to enable and set Active Session limits
  12. Click Ok
  13. Close GPedit.msc

Please note that the GP says “If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Remote Desktop Services allows sessions to remain active for an unlimited time. You can specify time limits for active sessions on the Sessions tab in the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration tool.” Yet I found this was not the case and session disconnected after 2 min.
